Hip-hop music PR in Manchester

Two lists, run as one campaign. The specialist hip-hop press, and the Manchester media and venue network that gives a writer a reason to take you seriously.

Manchester

Hip-hop is the genre where traditional music PR is least useful and most often sold anyway. A campaign built around print magazines and blog reviews will do very little for a UK rapper. The infrastructure that actually moves an artist is the platform layer: the channels, the radio shows, the curators. It operates on completely different terms to the indie press.

It also carries a weight of history that cuts both ways. Manchester bands get read, which is an advantage. They also get compared, immediately and often lazily, to four decades of predecessors. Getting ahead of that comparison is a specific piece of work and it belongs in the first draft of the pitch, not the fifth.

A hip-hop campaign run from Manchester therefore works on two levels at once. The genre list reaches the writers who cover this music seriously. The city list builds the local foundation that makes the genre pitch credible, because an artist who already has coverage, radio support and a live reputation at home is a considerably easier sell than one who arrives with only a track.

The hip-hop list

The realistic target set for a UK rap or grime campaign at this level, weighted towards platforms and radio rather than print.

Platform
Mixtape Madness

Strong on emerging talent and freestyle formats. One of the more realistic first platform placements for a new artist.

Platform
Independent rap channels

The mid-size UK channels that break artists before the big three notice them. Individually pitched, never blanket-emailed.

Radio
Reprezent Radio

London-based, youth-led, and genuinely receptive to emerging artists rather than only established ones.

Radio
BBC Introducing

Regional shows are a real route for rap, and the pipeline towards 1Xtra specialist play runs through them.

Community radio
Station specialist shows

The city stations and their rap and R&B programming. Small, engaged, and they actually listen to submissions.

Editorial
Independent UK rap press

The smaller writers and sites covering UK rap seriously. Lower volume, higher engagement, more likely to reply.

The Manchester list

Manchester's local music media, which is unusually strong for a UK city outside London.

Radio
Reform Radio

Community station with strong emerging-artist support and a real audience among the city's musicians.

Radio
Unity Radio

Long-standing Manchester station, particularly strong on dance and urban music.

Radio
XS Manchester

Rock-oriented commercial station with genuine local commitment.

Press
Manchester Evening News

Broad reach across Greater Manchester. A general-audience desk, so it needs a story rather than a release.

Press
The Skinny (North West)

Independent cultural coverage with real credibility locally. Competitive, and usually reached with some coverage behind you.

Everything about Manchester

The rooms

Night & Day Café remains the room a Manchester band is expected to have played, and its ongoing licensing fights have made it a story in its own right. The Deaf Institute and YES cover the step up, with YES's multiple rooms making it useful at several stages of a band's development. Band on the Wall carries genuine institutional weight after its refurbishment. Soup and The Peer Hat serve the more experimental and DIY end. Gullivers and The Castle Hotel anchor the Northern Quarter small-room circuit. Beyond those, Gorilla, Academy 2 and New Century mark the transition to a real touring audience.

How we pitch it

01

The visual is the pitch

Platforms are choosing between videos, not between press releases. If the video is not ready, the campaign is not ready, and we would rather push a date than run a campaign into a wall. We can produce the visual in-house if you need it.

02

Consistency beats a single push

One release with a PR budget behind it rarely moves a rap artist. Three releases in five months, each with the same targeted outreach and a growing retargeting audience, usually does. We will always tell you if your budget is better split across releases.
